Change the default Search Engine of your Firefox OS Smartphone

If you are using a Geeksphone Peak or Keon or even ZTE Open or Alcatel One Touch Fire, then you should have noticed that the default search engine is Bing (currently Google). The worst case there is no option to change it. But the good news of an open source device is, you can actually change your Smartphone’s behavior the way you like.

If your Geeksphone has Bing as a default search provider and you want to change it to Google or vice-versa this post will help. All you have to do is grab the workflow set up to build Gaia, the Firefox OS user interface. In the source tree for you’ve grabbed from github, find and edit the file gaia/apps/browser/js/browser.js and change:

DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_URL: ‘m.bing.com’,
DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_TITLE: ‘Bing’,
DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_ICON: ‘http://bing.com/favicon.ico’,

to

DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_URL: ‘www.google.com’,
DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_TITLE: ‘Google’,
DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_ICON: ‘https://www.google.com/favicon.ico’,

or if your default search provider is Google and you want to change it to Bing or Yahoo! or any other you want, simple do this change:

DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_URL: ‘www.google.com’,
DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_TITLE: ‘Google’,
DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_ICON: ‘https://www.google.com/favicon.ico’,

to

DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_URL: ‘m.bing.com’,
DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_TITLE: ‘Bing’,
DEFAULT_SEARCH_PROVIDER_ICON: ‘http://bing.com/favicon.ico’,

or simply replace the ‘m.bing.com to your favorite search engine. Along with the Title & Favicon.ico to complete the change as per your choice.

Then simply build (./build.sh gaia) and flash (./flash.sh gaia) Gaia to the phone. After the flash is complete, you should find the default search engine as per your choice.

    Wait, what?
I don't have one of these. Which is it?
    This is very confusingly written.
